LEPTOSPIROSIS OUTBREAK

I was listening to the news and I feel sad that after the typhoon and the flooding in the Northern Luzon area in thew Philippines, an outbreak of leptospirosis followed. Leptospirosis is transmitted through an open wound in the skin of a person from the urine of an infected animal and is contagious as long as it is still moist. It is transmitted from urine of rats, mice and voles, a wide range of other mammals including dogs, deer, rabbits, hedgehogs, cows, sheep, raccoons, possums, skunks. this outbreak of leptospirosis emerged after the floods where urine of infected animals mix in the flood. People with open wound that wade in the flood are prone to get this ailment.

The symptoms of leptospirosis include high fever, severe headache, chills, muscle aches, vomiting, and may include jaundice, red eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and/or a rash. About 104 people already died because of leptospirosis. It is sad that people who survived in the flood died in leptospirosos.
